Marmite vs. Vegemite

Marmite vs. Vegemite

Would you care for some concentrated yeast extract on your morning toast? Well, believe it or not, many people in the world regularly enjoy either Marmite or Vegemite as their breakfast spread of choice.

The main ingredient in these spreads is yeast extract, which is actually a by-product of beer brewing. The unusual flavour of the yeast extract is from the high concentration of glutamic acid. These spreads are fortified with a number of healthy nutrients, such as folic acid, niacin and B vitamins. On the downside, these spreads are very high in salt.

Marmite that is available in New Zealand is made by Sanitarium and it is slightly different than the British version of Marmite, which is made by Unilever. It is quite thick and sticky like molasses. The flavour is strong, salty and somewhat tangy. Vegemite, which is made in Australia, is thicker and does not taste quite as tangy as Marmite.

In 2012/2013 Kiwis encountered a Marmite shortage, known as 'Marmageddon'. Production of Marmite was put on hold due to earthquake damages at the main manufacturing facility in Christchurch. When it got really desperate, people started to auction off new and used jars of Marmite on the website "trademe" for up to $800!

Check out the video below to see how Mike and I react to trying Marmite and Vegemite for the first time ever.
